Early Life & Family
His true name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III. He was born October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri. His stage name is derived from his first and last initials.
Eminem never met his father, Marshall Mathers Jr., who abandoned the family when he was a baby and ignored all of his son’s efforts to contact him throughout his upbringing.
As a consequence, He was raised by his mother, Deborah “Debbie” Nelson. His mother could never keep a job for more than a few months at a period, so they travelled often between Missouri and Detroit, spending a significant amount of time in public housing complexes. “I would change schools two, three times a year,” Eminem later said. “That was probably the roughest part about it all.”
This wandering lifestyle had a significant influence on his personality. He had no close friends, stayed mostly to himself, and was viewed as an outsider at each new school. “Beat up in the bathroom, beat up in the hallways, shoved into lockers,” his memory goes.
He attended Lincoln High School in Warren, Michigan, where he failed ninth grade three times before dropping out at age 17. Despite his lack of academic success, He has always had a strong interest in language, consuming comic books and even studying the dictionary.
“I found that no matter how bad I was at school, like, and no matter how low my grades might have been at some times, I always was good at English,” he joked. “I simply wanted to be able to have all of these terms in my lexicon at all times, ready to use whenever I needed them. You know, somewhere, they’ll be imprisoned up.”
He has been harshly critical of how his mother reared him. He has openly accused her of prescription drug addiction, as well as mental and physical abuse, in his song lyrics. Debbie has categorically rejected all of these allegations, and in 1999 she launched a $10 million defamation lawsuit against her son. They resolved the lawsuit for $25,000.
Debbie’s book, My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem: Setting the Record Straight on My Life As Eminem’s Mother, was released in 2008 and recounts her side of the tale and their tumultuous relationship. In the book, she maintains that she never exploited her son and that her sole priority was her children.
Ex-Wife Kim Scott and Children
***Kim Scott and Eminem were married and divorced twice, most recently in 2006.
Eminem was just 15 years old when he met Kim Scott, then 13, at a home party. Kim, who claimed she did not know her father and had been sexually molested by her stepfather, moved in with Eminem and his mother, Debbie. Eminem and Kim quickly started dating, but their relationship was fraught from the start. Debbie kicked the pair out when he dropped out of school.
The pair split up and reunited many times before marrying right before he embarked on his first big tour in 1999. They divorced in 2001, after a lengthy, acrimonious, and extremely public custody battle for their daughter Hailie. The incident inspired the rapper to compose the 2000 song “Kim.”
Kim and Eminem had a rocky off-and-on relationship until they remarried in January 2006. Their second marriage was equally short-lived. Within three months, the rapper filed for divorce, and their split was finalised in December.
Children
With Kim Scott, Eminem raised three children: **Alaina, **Hailie Jade, and **Stevie.

Hailie, their middle daughter, has the biggest public prominence. In December 1995, the couple welcomed Hailie. He has rapped about Hailie throughout his career, including the 2004 song “Mockingbird” and the 2017 album Revival.
Eminem became increasingly involved in parenting in the early 2000s after adopting Alaina, Kim’s sister Dawn Scott’s daughter born in February 1993. As Dawn battled drug addiction, Eminem and Kim adopted Alaina. Alaina’s biological mother died in January 2016 after a suspected drug overdose.
Kim and her late ex-boyfriend Eric Hartter had a kid together, Stevie, whom the rapper adopted. Stevie, who is nonbinary and uses all pronouns, was born in April of 2002. Eminem became their father in 2005.
Rap Career
Eminem started his career in Detroit’s underground rap scene and rose to prominence with his first studio album, The Slim Shady LP, in 1999.
As a high school dropout, He discovered that the developing musical genre of hip-hop allowed him to convey his enthusiasm for language while also releasing his young fury. He used the stage moniker M&M, a fun homage to his initials, which he eventually phonetically spelt “Eminem.” Eminem associated with the nihilistic wrath of late-1980s and early-1990s rap music, and he was particularly drawn to N.W.A., the prominent and extremely controversial gangster rap team from Los Angeles.
Despite the fact that rap music was virtually entirely created by Black people at the time, Eminem, who has light white complexion and vivid blue eyes, emerged as a regular rap battle contender in Detroit. Eminem excelled at such improvisational verbal sparring, and despite his race, he swiftly rose to become one of the most renowned personalities in Detroit’s underground rap industry.
“I eventually realised that, although this boy over here may have more ladies and nicer clothing, he couldn’t do this like I can. “You understand what I mean?” Eminem recalls. “He cannot write what I am writing right now. And it began to feel as if Marshall was gaining some respect.
This time in Eminem’s life—working odd jobs to make ends meet while competing in rap battles and frantically seeking to obtain a record contract—was subsequently portrayed in the film 8 Mile. Eminem played Jimmy in the semi-autobiographical 2002 film, alongside Brittany Murphy.
Eminem’s breakout moment happened in 1997. He travelled to Los Angeles and finished second in that year’s Rap Olympics MC Battle. Dr. Dre, the famed rapper and former N.W.A. producer, then listened to Eminem’s independent release, The Slim Shady EP, on tape in the basement of executive Jimmy Iovine’s house. Dre was so pleased that he added the teenage rapper to his Interscope Records roster.
Eminem has become one of the most well-known rappers in the genre. He, more than any other musician, is responsible for rap’s rise to prominence in popular music.
Albums
Eminem has released 12 studio albums of original work, as well as two self-published records from early in his career. His two compilation albums featuring his greatest hits are Curtain Call (2005) and Curtain Call 2 (2022).
