Margaret Ann Lipton was born August 30, 1946, in New York City, New York, USA. She is the daughter of corporate lawyer Harold Lipton and artist Rita Benson. Growing up, Lipton attended many institutions, including Lawrence Junior High School and the Professional Children’s School in Manhattan, where she refined her acting abilities from an early age.
Lipton has two brothers: Robert Lipton, who is also an actor, and Kenneth Lipton. She is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent and follows Christianity as her faith.

Peggy Lipton started her career as a model, with her father arranging her first modelling gigs in New York and her mother encouraging her to pursue acting classes. Lipton became a Ford Agency model at the age of 15 and quickly rose through the ranks. Lipton relocated to Los Angeles with her family in 1964, and she signed a deal with Universal Pictures. She made her television debut at the age of 19 in 1965, on the NBC comedy The John Forsythe Show.
